How ferries work in Hong Kong

Hong Kong's ferries are run by licensed private operators, and each publishes its own timetable and fares. The same island can be served by more than one operator from different piers.

The Star Ferry Company runs the harbour crossings from Tsim Sha Tsui to Central and Wan Chai. Hong Kong & Kowloon Ferry serves Yung Shue Wan on Lamma and Peng Chau from Central, Discovery Bay Transportation Services runs the Central–Discovery Bay ferry, and smaller operators such as Tsui Wah Ferry Service and Best Sonic Industrial run kaito services to Po Toi, Tung Ping Chau, Kat O and Lai Chi Wo.

Fares are set per route. Some routes charge different fares on Sundays and public holidays, and concessions for children, seniors and people with disabilities follow each operator's rules. Each page lists the fares as the operator publishes them.

Many timetables differ between Monday to Saturday and Sundays and public holidays, and some kaito services do not sail every day. Where the next timetable is already published, the page switches to it on its first day; where it is not, the page says so. All times are Hong Kong time in 24-hour format.

Typhoon signals, strong winds and rainstorm warnings can suspend sailings. Operators announce these suspensions, and they appear here as a dated note when they were known at the time of checking.

Before you travel

Typhoon and rainstorm signals
When a typhoon signal or rainstorm warning is in force, operators can suspend sailings; check their notices before you set off.
Gate closing times
On some routes the time in the timetable is when the pier gate closes, not when the ferry leaves.
Sundays and holidays
Many routes run a different timetable on Sundays and public holidays.
Luggage, bikes and pets
Some operators limit free luggage and charge for bicycles and pets, which can need booking ahead.
Straight from the source
Times and fares come from the operator or the authority that publishes them.
Piers on the map
Both piers are marked where you board, not at the centre of town.
Fares broken out
Adult, child, vehicle and bicycle fares are listed separately, with the ticket type.

What changes through the year

These are the changes worth checking before you travel.

Summer
Typhoon and rainstorm season: sailings can be suspended at short notice.
Autumn
Typhoons are still possible; holiday timetables apply on public holidays.
Winter
The north-east monsoon can bring rough seas on exposed routes; special timetables can apply over the Lunar New Year.
Spring
Fog can delay or suspend sailings; operators bring in new timetables on the dates they publish.
